London, England
When Lady Diana and Prince Charles tied the knot in 1981, their wedding kicked off a fad of all things English and royal. So with the tabloids keeping tabs on the engagement of Prince William and Kate Middleton, all eyes are turning to the U.K. again. Speculators say the duo will tie the knot in 2011 (the 30th anniversary of his parents’ nuptials) or 2012 (the year Queen Elizabeth II celebrates 60 years on the throne). Either way, it’s a great excuse to visit London and get caught up on the Windsor world. Must-see stops include St. Paul’s Cathedral, Lady Diana’s former digs at Kensington Palace and, of course, Buckingham Palace, where the changing of the guards has been occurring punctually at 11:30 a.m. since Queen Victoria’s reign. Our fave stop: the Tower of London, for the crown jewels – the bounty includes a 530-carat cut diamond – and a peek at some darker royal history; since the 1080s, the Tower has served as a royal palace, fortress, prison, place of execution, arsenal and royal mint.
