Why I love Barbie
September 16th, 2010
by Tara Bradley
I handle the beauty pages for DWH, and this issue’s Beauty to Go section was inspired by a visit home to Kansas — when my mother had me clean out my closet. (I’m 33, so that was definitely interesting.) When I came across my old Beach Barbie, her carefree look made me want to throw on a sparkly one-piece, put on some hot pink lip gloss and hit the pool with my Banana Boat SPF 4 in-hand. Ah, the days!
Back then, every little thing related to Barbie was amazing. I remember how excited I got when my mom hand-sewed (yes, sewed) my Barbie a brand-new, 80s-themed outfit. How my neighbors and I used our sandbox (cat poo included) to pretend Barbie was at the beach. (I mentioned we lived in Kansas, right?) And how even after we chopped her hair off so she looked like Madonna circa-Who’s that Girl?, Ken still loved her — cowboy boots and all.
And so Barbie became my inspiration for this issue’s Beauty to Go section: minimal products, and carefree beauty. We even used Barbie as our model. (Alas, not my old one — that haircut is just not camera-ready.)
When it comes to your big day (and the days that follow), it’s about having fun with your look and not taking yourself too seriously. That’s why I love this Beauty to Go section so much. Be sure to check it out when the mag hits stands October 19th.
Have something that is inspiring your wedding day look? Send it over. From a doll to a color palette, the point is to be inspired.
