Offbeat Blog
April 7th, 2009
by Rebecca Kinnear
Have you ever wondered where the gothic, rockabilly and hippie girls get married? I did, which is how I discovered one of my favorite blogs to read when I’m procrastinating — Offbeat Bride. It’s chock-full of alternative, tattooed brides decked out in anything-but-white vintage wedding dresses, rockabilly corsets and birdcage veils, alongside their emo grooms sporting Chuck Taylors. The blog was started by Ariel Meadow Stallings, an offbeat bride who planned and DIYed every detail of her own wedding with flair and originality. (She even wrote a book about the process called Offbeat Bride: Taffeta-Free Alternatives for Independent Brides.) The blog is amazing and offers tips on all things DIY, including this rad light-up Christmas-ornament bouquet, and showcases plenty of unique and affordable wedding venues, such as zoos, museums and campsites. The real-wedding photos are playfully referred to as “wedding porn” and offer the ultimate voyeuristic glimpse of other nontraditional brides planning their big days.

For their wedding, Dani and David Dillard traveled all the way from Dallas to Isle of Palms, a seven-mile long island off the coast of South Carolina.
I'm a big fan of tripadvisor.com, the reader-reviewing site where guests can give honest feedback on their experiences at hotels, restaurants and attractions around the word. I'm on the website a lot as a resource for work, when planning trips for upcoming stories. But with their recent redesign, I'm on it even more -- not working, but playing their Traveler IQ Challenge.
If you're reading this blog and you're not engaged yet -- welcome! You're not alone, and after all, that proposal might be coming sooner than you think. Fifteen percent of proposals come in December, so that ring could be waiting under the tree already. It can't hurt to start daydreaming about what kind of wedding you want to have.
