Whoopie!
August 14th, 2009
by Tara Bradley
After we got back from Bar Harbor, Maine — the site of our bridal fashion shoot for the Winter 2009 issue (on stands 10/19) — Susan and I couldn’t stop talking about the a-maz-ing whoopie pies we had while we were there. What’s a whoopie pie? Think delicious chocolate-cake sandwiches filled with a yummy buttercream filling. So of course we had to have some sent to our office, so the rest of our crew could try them out. And since we’d been talking about them for weeks, when the box arrived from Cranberry Island Kitchen (Martha Stewart even loves them!), everyone was ready to dive in.
Not only do they take it up a notch with their flavors (from lemon-lime to champagne), but they also have bride-and-groom-themed creations too — which makes them great as favors for any New England wedding event. They were almost too cute to eat.
Blueberry is also big in Maine, but while blueberry jam, blueberry beer and blueberry scones are fun additions to your welcome baskets, try throwing in a whoopie pie or two if you’re headed to the Northeast — I have no doubt your guests will love the unexpected surprise.![]()

Four years ago on this day, I was on my honeymoon in St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Though I’ve been around the world as a travel writer since then, I still think it was the perfect place for me and my hubby. We’re both nature lovers, but we still had to make a compromise — he wanted hiking trails, and I wanted unspoiled beaches. St. John had both — and plenty more.
This month, I had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit Tanzania, a coastal country in east Africa. The experience was hard to capture in words or on film — the welcoming people, otherworldly landscape and exotic wildlife were simply magical. We visited three protected wildlife areas, each with its own personality but all equally awe-inspiring.

Whoopie Pies are a Maine
Whoopie Pies are a Maine staple. My favorite caterer Montes International Cafe in Bangor, ME makes the most fabulous ones!!! Next time...head to Bangor and experience not only their Whoopie pies, but their excellent lunches as well. Oh and Carmen...their pastry chef creates beautiful and amazing wedding cakes as well.
