If there’s one guarantee in travel, it’s that you can plan on running into the unexpected. Here are 10 travel tips from the Trusted Adventures travel alliance, a membership of nine award-winning travel companies. Read on to assure that travel to your destination goes off without a hitch.

1. Plan built-in buffer time to accommodate unexpected travel delays, missed connections and lost bags.

2. Carry on a day bag with enough resources (books, batteries, change of clothes, swimsuit, etc.) to keep you occupied and happy during unplanned delays and snafus.

3. Carry energy-boosting snack bars on as many legs of the journey as possible.

4. Never pass up an opportunity to use a bathroom, and carry a small roll of toilet tissue in your daypack.

5. Keep playing cards and travel games handy for transit slow-downs due to weather, road conditions and immigration delays.

6. Bring an empty duffel bag for shopping opportunities.

7. Keep your camera charged and readily available for spontaneous photo opportunities. (And bring extra memory cards too!)

8. Make and secure copies of your passport should you and your documents become separated.

9. Retain a list of itinerary-related phone numbers and addresses, as well as numbers from your home or business life you may need.

10. Embrace the new and unexpected, from indigenous food and drink to local dance steps and traditional activities!

Definitely carry your dress

Definitely carry your dress on to the plane! Ask your airline ahead of time if they have a place to store it during the flight. Be cautious of mailing your gown, especially to islands in Hawaii and the Caribbean. "Island time" means slower mail and you don't want to chance not having your gown on the big day. If it gets wrinkled while traveling, see if your resort offers steaming, or can recommend somewhere that will. Hope this helps!
