For the Groom: Tips on Choosing Wedding Attire

Most guys just want a wedding that meets their bride’s standard of perfection — what they forget is the groom is a bride’s most important accessory. (Yup, even more than the bouquet.) If you look good, she looks good, so make sure the reflection in the mirror is as smooth as those table runners she’s gushing about. You may be thinking, “But, Hunter, we’ve already spent so much on the wedding. Can’t I just rent a tux?” The clothes make the man, my friend, and this all-important occasion is a chance to get creative and really show your stuff. With these tips, you’ll be styling like a pimp for the price of a rental.

Consider your surroundings.
You’re traveling to a special place, so wear something that flows with the environment. If you’re having a beach wedding and sporting an expensive church tux, you won’t be the only person who feels uncomfortable. Opt for something light, like linen pants and a Cuban guayabera.

Choose the right shoes. In the mountains, a nice pair of cowboy boots is going to look way more slick than a pair of very pricey (and very dusty) Italian loafers.

Shop vintage. If you’re in Vegas, shouldn’t you should look as cool as the Rat Pack? Seek out classic styles in vintage boutiques or upscale secondhand stores, and you’ll find quality that stands the test of time for a fraction of the price. I personally wore a western suit from the ’60s — it had never been worn and cost only $300 for the sturdiest stitching I’ve ever seen. Bonus: I still rock it on nights out — which I couldn’t do with a modern-day rental.

Add color.
You live life in full color, so why dress in black and white? You’re the star of the show (well, co-star), so you want to stand out in a crowd. A $20 pink shirt will look way cooler than a $600 pair of black pants ever will.

Express yourself.
The best way to look like a high-end hubby is to let your personality shine through. Wear a tie that says something about you. It’s just a little bit of cloth, but it gets a lot of attention. (You can find ties full of character for great prices on independent sites like etsy.com.) Don’t forget to add some funky socks, suspenders, a hat or cuff links. It will show more about how you enjoy life and less about how you dress for Monday’s board meeting.

Accessorize. Instead of a flower, why not purchase a bespoke boutonniere and rock your personal passion on your lapel? Fritts Rosenow (at rosenowfloral.com) makes guitars, skateboards or anything your heart desires for about the same price as traditional flowers. And the handmade option will be a great re-wearable souvenir that will last as long as your love will.

You’re tying the knot in an amazing place, with an amazing lady, and guess what — you’re pretty amazing yourself. Let these things shine in what you wear, and you won’t just be the groom — you’ll be the Man.
