Winner: “Tina and Pedro and Italian Tourists,” photographed by Maurice Ramirez, based in San Francisco
Couple Tina Tam and Pedro Villena, from Daly City, CA, at San Francisco International Airport, Aug. 29, 2009
Inspiration “I’m interested in my clients’ personalities, the unique things they love about each other, and especially the activities they enjoy doing together. Traveling to different countries is a high priority for Tina and Pedro, so this airport means good things to them. While shooting in the airport, we came across this group of Italian tourists. I like showing movement, so I quickly placed my couple in their path so I could get them blurring past us.”
How to capture a similar moment “Be open to showing who you are together, rather than just posing with pretty backgrounds. In this case, the setting isn’t an exotic locale, but it’s a place that’s meaningful. Every couple has a unique story, and every destination wedding starts and ends in an airport.”
Best part of shooting weddings away “The romance and intimacy — after all, it’s usually only family and select friends who will make your wedding a part of their vacations. Add all the cultural details, and the getaway aspect is more intense.”
