Want to add personality to your save the dates and save money at the same time? I created 65 save-the-date magnets for my upcoming destination wedding for less than $50.
- First up, choose your photo -- I bought the digital rights to my favorite engagement portrait, but anything digital (beach trips, college football games, ski vacations) will do.
- Come up with an inviting headline (we ditched "Save the Date" for the more personal "Come Celebrate with Us").
- Then drive to your local Office Depot and have them size the photo (2" x 3.5"), style the text and print 10 per page on card stock. (Cost is roughly 58 cents per page; I suggest a matte finish over glossy, which gives it a more professional look.)
- Next, pick up some business-card-size magnets with adhesive (about $7 for 25) and invite your 'maids over for an assembling party.
- Send your magnets out to guests at least six months before your event, along with an accompanying note listing relevant details like the locale, host hotel if chosen and your wedding URL.
In total, this mini project cost me less than half of what the online services charged (less than $1 versus at least $2 per magnet) for a custom invite. Online orders take weeks to be delivered, but it only took us two hours (plus a bottle of champagne). Your guests will not only appreciate the picturesque heads-up, but they'll also be impressed by your creative effort.
